Snuggle:
Maybe I'm just not supposed to play wildly open-ended games?
Sometimes I think this is true with a lot of people. M&B is really a case of what you make it. Put yourself at risk and try to punch above your weight and you'll get captured a LOT. Work your way up through bandits and looters and train your guys up to, say, an elite force of Swadian Knights (I've got 26 of them already) and getting captured won't be much of a concern.
Also, here's a fun fact: Every 'hero' companion has one person they like and two they don't. In order to get a party of heroes you have to make sure they don't drive each other away. The most you can get to get along with each other is 8. Those 8 are:
Get them well equipped and put them on horseback along with some aforementioned knights and there will be nothing in the game you can't rip through.

I thought it'd be useful to put together a thread that had some not-so-obvious tips and tricks for M&B. I'll start with a couple.
Anyone have any more to share?

Places in Mount and BladeThere are three types of places you can visit in Mount and Blade and they are all marked on the world map. Settlements all have names and they are divided into villages, castles and towns. You can visit them simply by clicking on the name on the map and the difference is obvious as villages are the smallest, castles next and towns are the largest. The only other type of place you may come across is the training fields which is where you can learn how to wield weapons and fight skillfully. Villages, Castles and TownsVILLAGES: Often when you pledge allegiance to a particular faction the King will award you a small village in his empire. You can collect taxes from the village and build various improvements but villages do not earn you a great deal of money and they are open to attack. You can also attack villages yourself but as there is no option to conquer them, you can simply loot and pillage. Villages are connected to castles and towns so when you conquer a castle or town the nearby villages will change allegiance as well. CASTLES: A castle is a fortified stronghold that holds sway over the surrounding land. You can station troops here, imprison enemy troops and build various improvements. Castles will also provide a tax income for the lord who holds them. Troops stationed in a castle will cost you less money. TOWNS: These are the bustling centres of life in Calradia, you’ll find markets selling food, armor, weapons and horses. You’ll also find taverns with various shady characters enjoying a drink and the great tournaments take place in the arenas. You can station troops or prisoners in towns and they tend to be very well defended. Any lord holding a town can collect large amounts of money in the form of taxes. Laying Siege to a Castle or TownWhen you begin a game of Mount and Blade you will be reliant on taking on missions, competing in tournaments and selling any loot you have accumulated in order to build up some experience and cash. You’ll want to develop your character and train up a formidable fighting force before you attempt to take a castle or town. If you approach an enemy castle or town you will see that you have the option to lay siege. You will also be able to see the number of troops defending the stronghold. It is tough to take a castle or town so don’t attack unless you have a decent force. Different castles and towns have different methods of assault; either by ladders or by siege engine. When you lay siege to a town or castle you will first have to build the necessary the siege equipment and how long this will take depends on the engineering skill within your party. With the ladders or siege engine prepared you can lead your men in an assault. With ladders, the battle will start with the ladders in place and you and your men can simply charge up them and attack. With siege engines you will have to push the large wooden structure up to the city walls until the bridge crashes down and then you can swarm in. The difficulty comes from the narrow attack corridor which allows enemy troops to defend the position quite easily. You are peppered with arrow and bolt fire all the way as you approach the walls and fighting your way through the chaotic rabble of enemy soldiers can be a tough prospect. If you do manage to slay the enemy troops then with castles assaults there is often a small secondary battle with troops inside the castle. With towns you will have to fight a secondary battle in the streets before the final assault inside the castle. Being Awarded a Castle or TownWith the castle or town conquered you can ask your King to grant the lands to you. He will make a decision based on a number of factors including how many lands you already hold and how many lands other lords in your faction hold. The level of your renown will also have an impact and you will be more likely to win the lands if you led the assault. The final consideration is your personal relationship with the King. The more he likes you the more likely he will grant you the castle or town. This post is part of the series: Mount & Blade Guide

I need to know what the most effective way to earn money is in Mount and Blade for a brand new character is. I don't want to raid villages however and wouldn't like to have to lose honor for it. Thanks in advance.

You can earn a lot of money by finding tournaments and entering them. The tournament reward is usually not too great, but its possible to earn a few thousand denars by betting on yourself. If you place a max bet on yourself each round, you can earn up to 4000.
To find tournaments, go to a city and ask the arena master if there are any.

While I agree that tournaments one of the fastest ways of making quick cash, you are not guaranteed to win and you also need 500+ to bet 100 each round. If you find a tournament that suits your combat style go for it. However there are other ways of making money. In one game I decide to play as a merchant, I accepted all the quests to collect taxes for lords, you can make like 6K from each. But when I collected the taxes I didn't bring them to the Lord strait away, I invested it buying goods and building factories usually the one that cost 10K. When I made enough profit I payed back the Lords.
You could do the same but invest in armor and weapons.
You will lose opinion with the towns and villages, -5 opinion, when you collect the taxes.

I never raid villages. The penalties to your honour, relationship with the village and relationship to the lord who owns the village mean its just not worth it. Whatever story line you imagine for your character, if you want to become an independent king at some point then you're going to need lots of honour and high relations with a lot of lords. That's tough if you've spent your time up till then raiding villages.
Yes tournaments are a good way to make money (and win renown and nice equipment) but for a brand new character tournaments are going to be pretty challenging. How you want to make money will ultimately depend on you character. There are quite a lot of threads out there about making money so you could google those for tips but I'll give my 2 cents below.
The first thing some people will do is sign up as a freelancer in a lord's army. You get a salary and a little experience and if there's a battle then you get extra experience and maybe some loot. Personally however I find its not worth it because you'll spend a long time sat in a castle/city or wandering around the map.
I prefer to strike out on my own, find a small group of looters, defeat them and then sell the loot and prisoners. Even as a new character on foot that should be possible with a small group of looters (3-4) straight away. With a horse you should be able to take on 10-15 and as a horse archer (my current character) I went out and slaughtered a group of 23 immediately.
Repeat the above, tackling gradually larger and tougher bandits and eventually deserters. Personally I like to do this on my own. As soon as you have companions or troops you get a lot less experience and loot. Once you've got a decent pile of cash you can start buying productive enterprises. These are better than buying land early on.
At this point you've also probably levelled up a few times so you might consider entering a tournament. The new style tournaments, such as those in Floris, aren't knock out and you can make a lot of money betting on yourself without actually winning the tournament. Its at this point that I usually do the merchant quest you get at the very beginning. Hire some peasants so you have 5 men, talk to the merchant and then disband them and tackle the kidnappers lair on your own. You'll get a lot of good loot.
Once I can reliably win tournaments I transition from bandit hunter to professional tourney fighter. Of course if I come across some juicy bandits on my way to the next tournament I'll take them. Likewise bandit lairs give a lot of loot and at this point you should be able to take most of them alone. I really enjoy the freedom of this phase, you can go where you want, lords won't be attacking you and you're capable of outrunning or outfighting pretty much all the bandits out there.
By now you should be level 20-30 which means you're not really a brand new character anymore. I haven't mentioned trade because I don't do it (I find it boring) but I hope that answers your question!
